WEDUSEA are  delighted to announce that Dr James Kelly of lead partner Ocean Energy has received an award in recognition of his significant contributions to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards.

On behalf of IEC Standards, National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) presented Dr Kelly with the prestigious IEC 1906 Award at a glittering awards event in October 2024.

The IEC Executive Committee first created the 1906 award in 2004 to commemorate and honour the IEC’s experts around the world. The 1906 Award is granted in recognition of exceptional recent individual achievements which helped advance IEC activities in a significant way.

The International Electrotechnical Commission is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

It is the organization that prepares and publishes International Standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies. IEC Standards are often used as a basis to globally harmonize technical requirements in IEC member and non-member countries and IEC Standards play a critical role in developing world trade.

The IEC 1906 award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the IEC’s activities through their technical expertise and leadership. The award honours experts who have helped to make electrical systems and products safer, more reliable, and more efficient.

In 2007, The International Electrotechnical Commission announced the formation of Technical Committee 114: Marine Energy – Wave and Tidal Energy Converters. (This is abbreviated to TC-144).

The IEC recruited experts from around the world to develop International Standards to cover the performance of tidal and wave energy converters.

Dr James Kelly sits on four panels for TC-114. He is currently the convener (Lead) for AhG 10 for Power Quality.  He is also a contributing expert on the Maintenance Team for TS-100 Power Performance, AG-1 Chair Advisory Group, and AG-2 Publication Alignment.

Prof. Tony Lewis, Chief Technology Officer at OceanEnergy, commented: “We are delighted that Dr James Kelly has received this honour in recognition of his outstanding personal contribution to IEC standards. It is a testament to his hard work and ingenuity. The development of international standards for the emerging wave energy industry is vital for its continued development and commercialisation.”

One of the objectives of WEDUSEA is to help inform the standards used worldwide for the wave energy industry. The results of our pioneering programme will feed into the databases used to define the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Standards.
